July is Melasma Awareness Month: Understanding the Condition and How We Can Help

July marks Melasma Awareness Month, an important time to shed light on this common yet often misunderstood skin condition. At Veriderm Group, we’re passionate about empowering our clients with knowledge and delivering results through safe, effective treatments for conditions like melasma and hyperpigmentation

What is Melasma?

Melasma is a skin condition that causes dark, discolored patches, most commonly on the face. It often appears on the cheeks, forehead, bridge of the nose, and upper lip. These patches can range from light brown to grayish-brown and are more prevalent in women, especially those with medium to darker skin tones.

What causes Melasma?

Melasma is complex and triggered by multiple factors, including:

  • Sun Exposure: UV rays are one of the most significant triggers. Even minimal sun exposure can cause melasma to darken or return.
  • Hormonal Changes: Pregnancy (often referred to as the “mask of pregnancy”), birth control pills, and hormone therapy can all influence melasma.
  • Heat and Light: Infrared heat (like from cooking or saunas) and visible light can also worsen melasma, not just UV.
  • Genetics: A family history can increase the likelihood of developing melasma.
  • Skin Irritation: Certain cosmetics or skin care products can irritate the skin and make melasma worse.

Here’s Why Over-the-Counter Products Often Fall Short

Many people try to manage melasma with over-the-counter lightening creams or DIY remedies, but melasma can be stubborn and deep-rooted. Without professional guidance, these methods may lead to ineffective results or worse, irritation and rebound pigmentation.

Professional Solutions at Veriderm Group

As a professional aesthetics and laser clinic, we specialise in evidence-based, clinical-grade treatments tailored to each client’s skin type and pigmentation concerns. Our melasma treatment solutions include:

Chemical Peels:

We offer a range of professional peels designed to gently exfoliate and lighten pigmentation, promoting a more even skin tone with minimal downtime.

Depigmentation Systems:

Our depigmentation protocols combine targeted ingredients like azelaic acid, kojic acid, and retinoids to suppress pigment production and fade existing discoloration.

Customised Skin Care Plans:

We provide expert recommendations on medical-grade skin care products that work in harmony with our in-clinic treatments to maintain and protect your results.

Melasma may be persistent, but with the right guidance and clinical care, it can be managed. At Veriderm Group, we take a personalised and preventative approach to help you achieve radiant, healthy-looking skin, confidently and safely.
